Evaluation statement

I thought a lot during the creation of the Beijing Hutong project. I have learned not only the ability to extract the inspiration I am interested in through visual pictures and objects, but also to obtain my current inner feelings through words, and then use divergent thinking to present it abstractly or figuratively. come out.

I wanted to do this project because I recognized Architectural Designer: Herzog & De Meuron. During my research I learned that in 1994 the former Bankside Power Station was chosen as the new gallery venue. The following year they were appointed to transform the building into the Tate Modern it is today. Their proposal retained much of the building's original character, with the massive machinery removed and the building stripped down to its original steel and brick structure. The Turbine Hall was transformed into a dramatic entrance and display area, and the Boiler Room was transformed into a gallery. At the same time, the Beijing Bird's Nest is also their work. This reminds me of the social issue of how the Forbidden City in Beijing used to be the place where the royal family lived, but now it has been transformed into a museum and how the Siheyuan should be preserved and demolished.

In addition to this, I realized that the problem I most needed to correct was that I was too perfectionist. I often tend to get caught up in a certain inspiration and get stuck in my own thoughts, which makes me very inefficient. This also made me realize that in the process of creation, I need to have the ability to judge and think. I need to know what I'm doing with each step and have a plan. We can get all kinds of diverse information, and if we don’t have this ability, we can easily get lost or even beside the point.

At the beginning of the research, I started from the current hutong architecture and the beauty and impression I felt in the hutong. Immediately after that, I went to read the book "Ancient Stories in the South of the City" about the past of Beijing's hutongs, the documentary "I Repair Cultural Relics in the Forbidden City" about the past and present of its largest courtyard, the Forbidden City, and the documentary "Hutong" about its evolution to the present. In the process of absorbing, I actually realized that the life changes of humanities and history are reflected in the environment, but at the same time, I also got stuck on this inspiration. Text It gave me a lot of inspiration, but I didn't implement it in time to avoid visualizing and transforming it into something that I expressed myself. I want to present it to perfection, the inspiration just keeps filtering in my head over and over again, so the efficiency is very low. Later, I finally got out and realized that I need to implement my point of view in order to really modify, improve and organize it.

I take critical thinking to think about how shameful and absurd the past behavior of Hutong was in the past. I wanted to express the shock, the tearing and the decay of it. These are in stark contrast to today's society and my own pursuit of good things and life, which led me to the artist Kathleen Ryan. Her sculpture Bad Fruit focuses on formal sculptural issues such as volume, weight, pressure, balance and line, while subtly alluding to the historical and economic underpinnings of materials, showing inspiration from the natural world, involving the complexity of the history of objects, the circulation of objects and its relationship with nature. The durability and longevity of materials are in direct contrast to the decline they represent.

I admire people who have seen the grief and suffering of the world but still remain kind and beautiful. John Galliano was bullied by bad kids in the boys' school because of his birth and various reasons. He himself described that when he was working at Dior, he had to constantly output works like a slave, but his works were still beautiful and presented a dream that did not exist. Maison Margiela's Spring/Summer 2020 ready-to-wear collection pays tribute to the young nurses, airmen, army and navy who defended their homes during World War II to remind people of the cruelty of war and the preciousness of peace. We must cherish the privileges that we have been accustomed to in the present life in exchange for the sacrifice of our predecessors. The concept of his work got me thinking about my own project once again.

I will develop in my daily life the ability to appreciate the works of artists, maintain the ability to learn and record, and at the same time pay attention to the problems and changes of our society. I am satisfied with the development and final presentation of the Beijing Hutong project and I have learned a lot.
